Woohoo it's party season!! It’s also probably the only month out of the year that most of us mums have a guaranteed night out planned. Whether it’s New Years Eve, a work Christmas party, a get together with friends or a sneaky date night before all the craziness totally takes over, chances are there is something on your social calendar this month.
But what do you wear? And do you need to buy a new dress for every occasion? NO! Like me, you’ve probably got a few options in your wardrobe and at the very least you’d have a trust little black dress (LBD).
Today I’ve got five tips for you to help revive your LBD and to make it (and you) feel a bit more festive.
1. Statement heels.
A bold shoe is one of the easiest ways to make an outfit pop and once you find the right pair, it requires very little effort on your part. A bright colour is a great choice and you may even have a pair in your wardrobe already (mine are actually my wedding shoes). If you are teaming them with a black dress, absolutely ANY colour will work however a black or nude pair can be equally dramatic. Just think lots of details and embellishments. If you want to go out and buy a pair, there is no need to be conservative. Go crazy and buy whichever pair makes you the happiest. They are meant to be the hero of the outfit so the more colourful, strappy, impractical… the better!
2. A little bit of sparkle
Whether it is in your dress (like the metallic sheen on mine below), a shimmery clutch, or a glittery necklace, nothing says ‘Festive’ like a bit of sparkle. Go within your own limits. If you are feeling bold, go big with sequins and glitter or if that’s not your style, maybe wear a metallic nail polish or a subtle crystal headband. This is where the fun and whimsy come into your outfit so have fun with it.
3. Work the details
Chances are, when you drag that LBD out of your closet to try on (and possibly to check it still fits post children) you may feel a bit blah with your mum bun and make up free face. On the night make sure you jazz yourself up with a manicure, pedicure, blow dry and spray tan. Even if you DIY some (or all) of these things, the details really matter and all tie together to bring you and your dress to life. You will feel a million bucks and the outfit will shine that much brighter too.
4. No ‘Mummy’ Make Up
If ever there was a time to step outside your usual make up box, it is the holiday season. For evening do’s you can ramp up your eye makeup with strong eyeliner and possibly even some fake lashes. Napoleon Perdis have an amazing Lash Menu and you can just pop into a store or department store counter and have a professional apply the lashes of your choice for about $10. You might also want to colour match your lipstick with your shoes if you have gone for a colour and then dab on some cream illuminator over your cheekbones, in the corners of your eyes, your cupids bow and along the bridge of your nose. This will really pop in photographs and you will look amazing.
5. A glass of bubbles.
Champagne is the perfect accessory! No matter what you wear make sure you relax, let your hair down and grab a glass a bubbles. You so deserve it. Just make sure you aren’t the designator driver or on dream feed duty that night. Talk about a buzz kill!
